Accommodation and Property Trust Services
One of The Hawkevale Trust's latest projects combines one family's savings together with the Trust's own funds and support from the Department of Housing and Works to provide secure, shared accommodation for the family's 25 year-old daughter. The house represents a long term asset for The Hawkevale Trust that can meet the needs of other families in the future.
The impact of the program is reflected in the comments of the parents:
"Like many parents, we worried about what would happen to our daughter, who has an intellectual disability, after we died or were no longer capable of looking after her. We approached The Hawkevale Trust and donated money, which was used as a base for purchasing land on which to build a house for our daughter and another friend to live. Later, when deemed necessary, she will be cared for elsewhere at no further cost and the house will be used by The Hawkevale Trust to help other families like us."
Managed Trust Funds
John (not his real name) has an intellectual disability. A couple of years ago John's sister arranged for a Managed Trust Fund through The Hawkevale Trust. This involved placing funds in trust for John's future needs. John's sister chose this option for three reasons:
- Security of the funds - all funds are invested in interest-bearing deposits.
- Low cost of running the trust fund - the cost of managing any monies held in trust is very small compared to other trust funds.
- Comfort of knowing The Hawkevale Trust makes sure the money is spent on John.
This final point became highly apparent when another family member attempted to use the trust funds for alternative purposes, which The Hawkevale Trust did not allow to happen.
Personal Support Services
Several years ago The Hawkevale Trust set up a Personal Support Service at the request of Keith's family. When his mother died, the time came for this to be activated and The Hawkevale Trust put a volunteer visitor in place to visit Keith. The Executive and Board of The Hawkevale Trust also became very involved with setting up Keith's house to ensure his welfare was looked after and has continued to do so for many years.
Mrs Bernice Peters
"As an ageing parent I have been constantly worrying about the future for my son who has lived his lifetime in the family home and familiar surroundings. Friends say 'don't worry', but I do.
"It was during my never-ending 'shopping around' for help that I came across The Hawkevale Trust. Through the Trust I have made arrangements for my son to remain in the family home after my death, on condition that my son can live there as long as his health and ability allow. The Trust will assist my son to choose two other residents who will share the family home.
"Support will be arranged by the Trust with professional care organisations. The Trust will also provide their Personal Supports (visiting/advocacy) Service as part of the agreement.
"At last I am confident that I made the best possible arrangements to ensure a secure future for my son."
