Board Members and Staff

The Hawkevale Trust Board consists of a maximum of nine members: five appointed by Activ, two elected by members of the Trust and two appointed by the Board. Skills brought to the Board by its current members include legal, actuarial, banking and finance, marketing, business management, disability and advocacy.

Mr Laurence Iffla — Chairman

Laurence was appointed Chairman of the Trust in 1996. He is a partner in the national legal firm Mallesons Stephen Jacques and practises in the areas of Commercial Property Law, States taxes and trusts.

Laurence is a former member and Treasurer of the Council of Law Society of Western Australia.

He has had a long association with Activ through his family. His father was on the Activ Board and his brother attends Activ Industries.

Laurence has been a member of the Board since 1993 and has previously held the positions of Deputy Chairperson and Secretary.

Mrs Leonie Walker — Vice Chairperson

Leonie was elected to the Board in 2003. She is a mother of two adult sons with intellectual disabilities and lives with her husband in Dunsborough.

Leonie has a long history with Activ. She joined in 1975 and has served in various positions with the Busselton Support Group. She has been Secretary or President of the South Regional Council for the past 15 years and was awarded Honorary Life membership in 2001.

In December 1993, Leonie was appointed to the inaugural Board of the Disability Services Commission and remained a member until February 2000. In December 2000, she took up a position on the Ministerial Advisory Council for Disabilities and chaired the Regional Advisory Forum standing committee as well as serving on several additional standing committees.

Leonie is also an active member of her community, holding various positions and serving as a volunteer ambulance officer for 17 years. In June 2000, she was nominated for WA Citizen of the Year Community Services Division and in 2003, was awarded a Centenary Medal for Community Service.

Mr Dennis Barton — Treasurer

Dennis was appointed to The Hawkevale Trust Board in 1994. He also served on the Board of Activ from 1995 to 2003, including as Treasurer. Dennis was elected Treasurer of The Hawkevale Trust in 1999.

Dennis has practised as a consulting actuary since 1980.

He has also been State Chairman of the Association of Superannuation Funds and a member of the State Council of the Securities Institute of Australia.

Mr Ken Booth

Ken joined the Board of Directors in January 1995 as an appointee of Activ. He was Vice Chairman and Secretary of the Trust from 1996 until early 2005.

Ken has had a 35 year career in education, including teaching, curriculum development, human resources management, development of legislation and strategic management and policy. He now works as an independent consultant and civil celebrant.

Ken has family links with Activ through his parents, who were involved in the Fremantle Branch of the Slow Learning Children's Group. He also served on the Board of Activ from October 1999 to May 2002.

Ms Julie Beeck

Julie joined The Hawkevale Trust Board in November 2001.

She is currently Managing Director of Synovate, a global market research company. Her marketing expertise is helping further develop the services and profile of The Hawkevale Trust.

Julie has consulted to government and private sector organizations in Perth for 15 years. She has previously been WA Chair of the Australian Market and Social Research Society and a member of the UWA Graduates Association Marketing Committee.

Mr Everard Yeo

Mr Yeo was nominated and appointed to the Board in June 2006. He has been involved in the property development industry for over 40 years and has a wide experience in property matters. Since 1994 his business has been largely involved with the operation and development of retirement villages and aged care facilities. He has been a Consultant to The Salvation Army and has held various Board positions including 9 years on the Board for the Royal Australian Air Force Association. He is a past President of the Retirement Villages Association in Western Australia.

Mr Yeo has had a long family association of Activ beginning with his late parents' involvement originally in the Slow Learning Children's Group.

The Yeo family provided funds to Hawkevale Trust for the purchase of a group home for his brother, David. The Trust also provided him with personal support services.

Ms Yvonne Parnell — Executive Officer

Ms Yvonne Parnell was appointed Executive Officer in April 2008.

Ms Parnell is also involved in operating a private consulting business that provides strategic property and asset planning advice to business, government and not-for-profit groups.

Ms Parnell's previous roles have included managing the operations of the Dymocks chain of bookstores in WA and SA as well as managing the operations of eye care specialists, Laubman & Pank, in WA and NT for over ten years. She also has eight years finance and administration experience with accountants, Arthur Andersen through to 1994.

Ms Parnell is currently the Chair of the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Community Advisory Council and has been a member of the Council since 2003. She is also a member of the North Metropolitan Area Health Service Community Advisory Council and has recently been appointed to the Social Sustainability Committee for the City of Subiaco.

Ms Parnell is married to husband Geoff, has three grown-up step children, and lives in Subiaco.

Mrs Amelia McLean — Executive Officer’s Assistant

Mrs McLean was employed by the Hawkevale Trust in 2005 as Administrative Assistant to the Executive Officer. A qualified primary and special educational needs teacher, Mrs McLean has held teaching positions in both Perth and country Western Australia, as well as teaching for five years in the United Kingdom and holding the positions of Trainee Teacher Mentor for the University of Roehampton in Surrey, Junior School Coordinator and elected Teacher Representative for a School Board of Governors.

Mrs McLean is married with two young sons.
